All About the Home Study Process

The home study process is one that causes many who are considering adoption some stress. However, for me, this is one of the aspects of the adoption process that I remember as a great experience. This is a great time to sit down and have discussions with your family or partner about how you plan to parent, go over the safety of your home, and forge relationships with adoption professionals. Do Some Research and Meet with An Adoption Professional

As a prospective adoptive parent, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. In most cases, before you can move forward with the adoption process, you’ll need to complete the home study process. Every state has different home study requirements and these requirements differ based on whether you’re seeking a domestic or international adoption.

A home study entails filling out a lot of paperwork and then a social worker coming to your home to review your documents and physically assess your home. In order to work with a social worker, you’ll need to reach out to an adoption agency, a social worker that specializes in home studies, or reach out to an adoption lawyer for a suggestion. Personally, working with an adoption agency helped my husband and I because they were there to guide us through every step and to answer questions as we embarked on our adoption journey.

Go Through your Checklist and Make Changes if Necessary

You will receive a list of requirements for your state for a home study and it’s very important that you ensure that you have these things in your home. For example, in most cases, you’ll need to ensure that the room you plan to use for your child has a window,  you’ll need to make sure you have fire extinguishers on each floor of your home and you’ll have to make sure you have working fire and carbon monoxide detectors, etc. Once you are working with an adoption professional, they will give you the information that you need to You can find a general checklist here

If you are lacking something that you need to change, make sure to do so. This may mean working with an outside person to get help. It is important that you take these things seriously and ensure that your home is ready to go. (Truthfully, it would be great if all parents had this checklist to have a safe home for their kiddos!)

Fill Out Paperwork and Ask Questions

You will likely have a lot of paperwork to fill out including financial documents, health pages, etc. You will also be required to reflect on how you were raised, how you plan to parent, and about the relationships you have with your family. This can be hard and emotional as you go through your own childhood and contemplate the kind of parent that you plan to be. However, this is so important as you plan to parent a child.

You may have questions and that’s ok! Your adoption professionals are there to help you through this, so don’t hesitate to reach out should you have questions about any step of the process.

Relax

I know that this is easier said than done, but it’s important that you take some time to relax. The goal of a social worker is to support you in order to find a safe home for a child. If you are adhering to the protocols and requirements provided to you, rest assured that you are prepared. Self-care is an important priority to take during the entire adoption process!
